A Not So Fun Visit to Nakasero Hospital

Long story short, Lotte hurt her knee playing a (supposed to be) fun game of football (soccer) last week. I went with her to see some doctors here in Kasese, but honestly, they weren't much help at all. You know how people say "no news is good news?" Well, that was not the case here. They just kind of shrugged and said everything seemed fine. Not the most reassuring answer... With little luck, we took an impromptu 7-hour drive to Nakasero Hospital in Kampala for an MRI scan and to speak with better doctors. 1,000,000+ UGX later, Lotte can now hobble around on crutches like a pro. She also completed her scan, got medication, and was admitted for the night. Sleeping here was so so rough. We actually didn't get any sleep... maybe 2-3 hours at most. The nurse brought us to our “room” which was just a little square with curtains and several other patients around us. Lotte got the patient bed, and I slept on a broken leather chair that turned into a couch, that could probably be featured on "World's Worst Furniture." We basically stayed in the hallway of a crowded hospital with the privacy of ugly green sheets. However, I can't complain too much because I think the patient next to us was having a much harder time, needing an oxygen tank and a lot of other things. This was quite the day and night.

Fast forward to the doctor's verdict: Lotte tore her ACL, PCL, and meniscus, and the bone is damaged, too, because of the ACL tear. I am no doctor, but that utterly sucks. PSA: I don't ever suggest getting a serious injury in a country with poor healthcare. With more information and speaking to her family and doctors in Denmark, she has decided to go home early to get physical therapy. I will miss her company a lot, but for the days she has left in Kasese before returning home, we will make the best of it!
